Luigi Stringa

Luigi Stringa was born in Genova, Italy, in 1939 (March 22). After graduating in Physics from the University of Genoa, his main interests have been focusing on Computer Architecture and Artificial Intelligence. He is the author of many scientific papers, as well as owner of several patents. He was awarded many international prizes, such as the Cristoforo Colombo International Prize for Communication theory (1982) He taught these subjects at the University of Genova, Roma, Trento (Italy).
Entered in Elsag (Italy) in 1969 as a researcher, he became division research director, then central research director, and finally vice director general in 1979. He directed the project of the first programmable parallel processor commercialized in the world, with application to pattern recognition. EMMA was one of the first intelligent character recognizer, implemented for automatic mail sorting by using ZIP code.
In 1980 he became director general of Selenia, in 1982 he was appointed managing director of Elsag, 1983 general manager of Selenia and responsible for the Selenia-Elsag group (a dozen companies, more than 12,000 employees).
At the beginning of 1985, he left SELENIA to become director of IRST, Institute for Scientific and Technological Research in Trento (Italy) inside ITC (Istituto Trentino di Cultura, now named FBK), refounding it with new and more decisive objectives and assuming full responsibility on both scientific and management levels. With a personnel of 180 people, IRST become under Stringa direction the most important Italian centre for research in Artificial Intelligence and Microelectronics.
At IRST he was also the responsible of the Computer Vision research line.
In 1994 he left IRST, and he continued his scientific activity as consultant for important companies, mainly in the field of image processing, computer vision, microelectronics.
He died on May 16, 2000.

July 5th 2010 FBK organized the event Commemoration of Luigi Stringa - on the tenth anniversary of his death
